AP STATS CHAP 4

TermDefinition
population entire group of individuals
census collects data from every individual in population
sample subset of individuals in the population
sample survey study that collects data from a sample to learn about the population from which the sample was selected
convenience sampling selects individual from the population who are easy to reach *BIAS*
bias shows Bias if it is very likely to underestimate or very likely to overestimate the value you want to know
voluntary response sampling allows people to choose to be in the sample by responding to a general invitation
sampling error difference between sample results and a true population result --> results from sample chance fluctuation
non-sampling error sample data is incorrectly recorded --> bias, recorded wrong, faulty instruments
random sampling involves using a chance process to determine which members of a population are included in the sample
simple random sample (SRS) of size n is chosen in such a way that every group of n individuals in the population has an equal chance to be selected as the sample
strata groups of individuals in a population who share characteristics thought to be associated with the variables being measured in a study
stratified random sampling selects a sample by choosing an SRS from each stratum and combining the SRS, into one overall sample
sampling without replacement can only use once
sampling with replacement can use more than once
systematic sampling selects a sample from an ordered arrangement of the population by randomly selecting one of the first k individuals and choosing every kth individual therafter
cluster sampling selects a sample by randomly choosing clusters and including each member of selected clusters in sample
cluster a group of individuals in population that are located near each other
stratified random sampling works best when individual within each stratum are similar (homogenous) --> more precise answers
cluster are heterogeneous (mirror the population)
undercoverage occurs when some members of the population are less likely to be chosen or cannot be chosen in a sample
nonresponse occurs when an individual chosen for the sample can't be contacted or refuses to participate
response bias occurs when there is a systematic pattern of inaccurate answers to a survey question
question word bias manipulate questions by adding specific words

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
