Reticular Formation Regulates consciousness, sleep-wake cycles, motor tone, and vital autonomic functions. Within brainstem.
Reticular Activation system Regulates arousal, wakefulness, and selective attention. Within brainstem. Also filters incoming stimuli and replays important info.
Cerbellum Coordinates voluntary movements and balance. Located behind the brain and is the big mushy chunk behind brainstem.
Thalamus Receives sensory info(besides smell) and routes it to the higher brain. Middle of the brain, looks like a jellybean. Limbic system.
Pituitary Gland Releases hormones that influence growth and controls all the other glands. Front of the brain and behind the nose. Limbic system.
Limbic System Responsible for emotions and drives. Includes the Thalamus, Hypothalamus, Pituitary Gland, Amgydala, Corpus Callosum, and Hippocampus.
Hypothalamus Regulates all aspects of behavior that are regulated by hormones. Middle of the brain, located under the Thalamus. Limbic system.
Hippocampus Involved in the memory process. Shaped like a seahorse and is located around the middle of the brain. Limbic system.
Amygdala Processes emotions such as rage, fear, pleasure, and sadness. Also responsible for fight or flight response. Almond shaped and is front of hippocampus or in the temporal lobe. Limbic system.
Pons Coordinates movement, sleep, and dreams. Located in the the lower brainstem.
Corpus Callosum Band of neural fibers connecting the two brain hemispheres. Located in the limbic system.
Occipital Lobe For vision and vision processing. At the back of the brain and above cerebellum.
Visual Cortex For recognizing patterns. Occipital Lobe.
Temporal Lobe For auditory processing. Bottom of the brain.
Auditory Cortex Involved in processing speech sounds. Temporal Lobe.
Wernicke's Area Controls language and reception. Cannot affect comprehension of words and processing of info if damaged. Temporal Lobe.
Parietal Lobe Processing of sensory information such as touch/pain. Upper back of the brain.
Somatosensory Cortex Involved in constructing an understanding of what is being felt. Parietal Lobe.
Frontal Lobe Involved in making plans and judgements. In the front of the brain, duh.
Motor Cortex Controls voluntary movements. Frontal Lobe
Prefrontal Fortex Expression of personality and appropriate social behavior. Frontal Lobe.
Broca's Area Involved in controlling language expression and muscle movement involved in speech(motor speech). Frontal Lobe.
