Earth's Structure
Earth's Structure Review
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| earth | the rocky planet we live on, made of several layers with different properties |
| geosphere | the solid part of Earth, including the crust, mantel and core |
| crust | Earth's thin, solid, outer layer where we live |
| continental crust | the thicker, less dense crust that makes up the continenents |
| oceanic crust | the thinner, denser crust found beneath the oceans |
| mantle | the thick layer of hot, solid rock beneath Earth's crust |
| upper mantle | the upper portion of the mantle that includes rigid and ofter regions |
| lower mantle | the deeper, hotter part of the mantle located above the core |
| core | Earth's deepest layer, made mostly of iron and nickel |
| outer core | the liquid layer of Earth's core made mostly of iron and nickel |
| inner core | the solid, extremely hot center of Earth |
| lithosphere | the rigid outer layer made of the crust and uppermost mantle |
| asthenosphere | a softer, slowly flowing layer beneath the lithosphere |
| mesosphere | another name often used for the strong, solid lower mantle |
| tectonic plate | a large, rigid piece of lithosphere that moves over the atmosphere |
| convection current | a circular movement caused by differences in temperature and density |
| magma | hot, melted or partly melted rock found beneath Earth's surface |
| lava | magma that reaches Earth's surface |
| mineral | a naturally occurring solid mixture of one or more minerals or other materials |
| rock | a naturally occurring solid mixture of one or more minerals or other materials |
| rock cycle | the series of processes that form, change, and break down rocks |
| seismic wave | a wave of energy produced by an earthquake or other sudden movement inside Earth |
| earthquake | a sudden shaking of the ground caused by movement in Earth's crust or along faults |
| fault | a crack or break in Earth's crust where rocks can move |
| focus | the point inside Earth where an earthquake begins |
| epicenter | the point on Earth's surface directly above an earthquake's focus |
| trench | a long, deep depression in the ocean floor, often formed at a subduction zone |
| geothermal energy | heat energy that comes from inside the Earth |
| atmospheric layers | exosphere, thermosphere, mesosphere |
| exosphere | outermost layer, merges with space |
| thermosphere | auroras occur here; satellites orbit here |
| troposphere | meteors burn up here |
| stratosphere | contains the ozone layer |
| mesosphere | closest to Earth, where weather occurs |
