Cells Test

TermDefinition
CELL MEMBRANE ~Outer covering of animal cells ~Just under the cell wall in plant cell ~Semi Permeable: Controls movement of materials in and out of the cell
CYTOPLASM ~Clear, thick, jelly-like substance ~Organelles are found within the cytoplasm
NUCLEUS ~The control center of the cell ~Regulate all activities of the cell ~Nucleolus and Chromosomes are found inside the nucleus ~Chromosomes are the compacted form of DNA
RIBOSOMES ~Makes protein
MITOCHONDRIA ~“Powerhouse” of the cell ~Makes energy!
ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM (ROUGH OR SMOOTH) ~Transportation system - carries proteins that are made in the ~nucleus from inside the cell to outside the cell ~Rough = Ribosomes
GOLGI BODIES ~Various molecules are manufactured and packaged for export from the cell.
VACUOLES ~Plant cells usually have 1 large vacuole ~Animals may have a few small ones, if any. ~Stores water for the cell
LYSOSOMES (only Animal cells) ~Contains enzyme which break down large food molecules and old cell parts. New parts can be made again (Enzymes - molecules that speed up a chemical reaction)
CYTOSKELETON ~Provide shape for animal and plant cell **For cell project, only need to show this for the animal
CELL WALL ~Found in plant cells ONLY ~Provides support and protection Strong
CHLOROPLAST *PLANTS ONLY* ~Food producing organelles ~Captures sunlight which then can be used during photosynthesis ~Green due to chlorophyll
NUCLEOLUS ~Makes ribosomes
ORGANELLES ~Structures within the cell that work together for the cell to function ORGANELLES → CELLS→ TISSUES → ORGANS → ORGAN SYSTEMS → ORGANISM

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
