Properties of Matter
Physical Properties of Matter
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Property | A characteristic or trait |
| Matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space (volume) |
| Physical Property | characteristics that can be observed or measured without changing the chemical identity of the substance |
| States of Matter | Solid, Liquid, Gas |
| Solids | Definite shape and a definite volume |
| Particles of a solid | Tightly packed together; particles vibrate |
| Liquid | No definite shape but a definite volume |
| Particles of a liquid | Packed together but are able to slide past one another |
| Gas | No definite shape and no definite volume |
| Particles of a gas | Move rapidly and bounce off one another |
| Thermal energy | heat energy |
| Melting | Adding heat to a solid to change into a liquid |
| Freezing | Taking away heat to turn a liquid into a solid |
| Evaporation | Adding heat to a liquid to change into a gas |
| Condensation | Taking away heat from a gas to change into a liquid |
| Sublimation | Adding intense heat to change a solid DIRECTLY into a gas |
| Mass | The amount of matter in an object; measured in grams (g) |
| Volume | The amount of space an object occupies; measured in milliters (ml) or centimeters (cm3) |
| Density | How tightly packed the particles are in an object; measured by mass divided by volume |
| Texture | How something feels to touch |
| Hardness | How easily something can scratch or dent |
| Odor | How something smells |
| Magnetism | If something is attracted to a magnet; iron or metal |
| Conductivity | The ability to attract heat or electricity |
| Conductor | Metal or iron |
| Insulator | Rubber, Plastic, Glass (blocks the ability to attract heat or electricity) |
| Luster | How shiny something looks when light bounces off of it |
| Triple Beam Balance | Tool used to measure the mass of an object in grams (g) |
| Graduated Cylinder | Tool used to measure the volume of a liquid or an irregular object |
| Formula for calculating the volume of a solid | Length X Width X Height; measured in cm3 |
| Boiling Point | The temperature at which a liquid changes to a gas; 100 degrees celsius |
| Freezing Point | The temperature at which a liquid changes into a solid; 0 degrees celsius |
| Solubility | The ability of a substance to be dissolved into another substance |
