Chapter 3 vocab
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Atom | smallest part of an element that has the elements properties |
| Element | a pure substance that cannot be separated into simpler substances |
| Molecule | the smallest unit of a compound (can be two elements bonded to itself) |
| Compound | made up of 2 or more different elements that are chemically combined |
| Mixture | Can be homogeneous or heterogeneous. It is NOT chemically combined. Heterogeneous is where it is not blended smoothly and you can see the parts. Homogeneous is where you have a constant composition throughout and you can't see the different parts. |
| Solution | A uniform mixture that can be a solid, liquid, or a gas. |
| states of matter | One of the physical forms of matter |
| solid | Has a definite shape and volume, molecules are tightly packed |
| liquid | Flows, has a constant volume, takes shape of container. Not rigidly held in place |
| gas | Flows, fills entire container, takes shape of container, particles are far apart. |
| vapor | Gas state of something that is a solid or liquid at room temperature. |
| phase change | Transition of matter from one phase to another |
| law of conservation of mass | Mass is neither created nor destroyed. |
| percent by mass | Ration of mass of each element to the total mass of the compound. |
