Unit 1 (8th)
The History & Formation of a Dynamic Earth
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| density | the amount of mass per unit of volume |
| mass | A measure of the amount of matter in an object |
| volume | The amount of space an object takes up |
| differentiation | The process in which materials separate and form layers based on differences in density, with denser materials sinking and less dense materials rising |
| crust | The thin and solid outermost layer of the Earth |
| continental crust | the relatively thick part of the earth's crust that forms the large landmasses. It is generally older and less dense than the oceanic crust |
| oceanic crust | thinner, more dense, younger crust making ocean floor; consists of primarily basalt |
| mantle | The layer of hot, solid material between Earth's crust and core. |
| outer core | the liquid layer of the Earth's core that lies beneath the mantle and surrounds the inner core |
| inner core | A dense sphere of solid iron and nickel at the center of Earth |
| lithosphere | A rigid layer made up of the crust and the uppermost part of the mantle; the tectonic plates are within this layer |
| asthenosphere | The soft layer of the mantle on which the lithosphere and tectonic plates float |
| convection currents | Circular currents in the mantle caused by the magma being heated by the core off the Earth |
| thermal energy | The total energy of motion in the particles of a substance |
| convection | The transfer of thermal energy by the circulation or movement of a liquid or gas |
| conduction | The direct transfer of heat from one substance to another substance that it is touching. |
| radiation | The transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves |
| thermal equilibrium | The state of two or more objects or substances in contact when they have reached an equal, common temperature |
| constructive processes | The geologic processes in which Earth's surface is built up, such as mountain building and volcanism. |
| destructive processes | The geologic processes in which Earth's surface is broken down, such as weathering and erosion. |
| weathering | The breaking down of rocks and other materials on the Earth's surface; This process "breaks it" |
| erosion | Processes by which rock, sand, and soil are carried away; This process "takes it" |
| orogeny | A process in which tectonic plates collide and fold upward to form a mountain range. |
| sedimentary rock | A type of rock that forms from compressed or cemented layers of sediment over time. |
| igneous rock | A type of rock that forms from the cooling of molten rock at or below the surface. |
| metamorphic rock | A type of rock that forms from an existing rock that is changed by heat, pressure, or chemical reactions. |
