TM2: DestEverywhere

Twig Module 2 Final Test STUDY Set

QuestionAnswer
Cool air sinks and warm air rises. True
It's very dry at the equator because it is so hot. False
Warm air cools as it rises. True
When warm moist air is forced to rise by a mountain, rain usually occurs. True
Winds blow from high-pressure areas to low-pressure areas. True
Higher places are usually warmer because they are closer to the sun. False
Weather fronts occur when air masses collide. True
The Earth's rotation causes wind to be deflected. True
The Earth's rotation only affects winds at the equator. False
Winds are caused by uneven heating of the Earth's surface. True
Define: Weather Atmospheric conditions at a specific time in a specific area.
As altitude gets higher what happens to the temperature? It usually gets lower or it decreases (gets colder)
At what temperature does precipitation become snow? At 0 degrees Celsius OR at 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
Precipitation water falling back to Earth in the form of rain, snow, Sleet, hail, etc.
Groundwater water found beneath the Earth's surface filling the spaces, cracks, and pores in soil, sand, and rock
Transpiration the process by which plants release water vapor that was absorbed through its roots back into the air (plant sweat)
Condensation the process when water vapor turns back into a liquid
Evaporation the process where water turns into water vapor (gas form) due to heating up
The Sun's rays are less concentrated the further away from the equator you get due to what? The angle at which the sunlight rays hit the Earth's surface.
Why does water evaporate? The water molecules have enough energy to escape into the air.
How does water vapor condense and form clouds? Water vapor molecules rise, cool, and lose energy.
Conduction the movement of thermal energy through matter by direct physical contact between materials
Why is the speed at which floor material cools down important to an engineer designing a passive solar house? A passive solar house uses its building structure and surroundings to naturally collect, store, and distribute the sun's heat. The cooling floor is a factor in how well the house is designed.
What is the purpose of an experiment in which you heat different materials under heat lamps? To see how fast the different materials heated up and cooled down.
Air is less dense the higher you are above ground. True
What are the effects on weather in areas with high air pressure? High pressure generally brings sunny, fair weather with light winds.
What causes convection currents in the air? Unevenly heated surfaces transfer heat to the air above. This causes uneven temperatures that then cause uneven evaporation and cloud coverage in the atmosphere.
The westerlies are... ... winds that move from west to east in the both hemispheres between 30 and 60 degrees latitude.
The tradewinds are... ... consistent, prevailing wind currents that blow from east to west across the Earth's tropical and subtropical regions near the equator.
The polar easterlies are... ... dry, cold prevailing winds that blow from the high-pressure areas at the North and South Poles toward sub-polar low-pressure regions.
Land masses change the direction of ocean currents. True
All the oceans have the same temperature. False
Wind patterns are fairly similar to current patterns. True
Coastlines of all land masses have cold currents. False
All the currents in the Arctic or Antarctic are warm. False
The rotation of the Earth causes water to move toward the poles. True
Water moves toward the poles as there is less water there. False
The effect of the wind causes water to move toward the poles. True
Gravity pulls water toward the poles. False
Water moves toward the poles due to differences in salinity . True
