Physical Properties

Science Test

QuestionAnswer
Electrical Conductivity the ability of matter to conduct, or carry a long, a electric current
Thermal Conductivity the ability of a material to conduct thermal energy
Physical Property a characteristic of matter that you can observe or measure without changing the identity of the matter
Solid the particles that make up a solid are very close together and vibrate back and forth
Liquid the particles that make up a liquid more energy- thus more motion- than the particles in a solid. Each particle still touches the particle around it, but they don't slide past each other
Gass the particles that make up a gass move very quickly, spread out, and fill their container
Mass the amount of matter in a object
Density the mass per unit volume of a substance
Solubility the ability of one substance to dissolve in another
Mass vs. Weight weight changes with location but mass doesn't
Volume the amount of space something takes up (mL often used)
Property: Mass -the amount of matter in a object -size-dependent -typically is not used to seperate a mixture
Property: Conductivity -the ability of matter to conduct, or carry along, electricity or heat -size independent -typically is not used to seperate a mixture
Property: Volume -the amount of spare something occupies -size -dependent -volume could be used to seperate mixtures whose parts can be seperated by filtration
Property: Boiling/Melting Points -the tempature at which a material changes state -size-independent -each part of a mixture will boil or melt at a different tempature
Property: State of Matter -whether something is a solid, liquid,or gas -size-independent -a liquid can be poured of a solid
Property: Density -the amount of mass per unit of volume -size-independent -objects with greater density sink in objects with less density
Property: Solubility -the ability of one substance to solve in another -size independent -dissolve a soluble material to seperate it from a material with less solubility
Property: Magnetism -attractive force for some metals, especially iron -size-independent -attract iron from a mixture of materials
Bonds keeps atoms together

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
