QuestionAnswer
What do producers make using carbon from carbon dioxide? Energy storage molecules
When do organisms give of carbon dioxide? When they release energy from energy storage molecules during cellular respiration
Can carbon be created or used up? No. Carbon moves around, but it is not created or destroyed
In a closed ecosystem, what happens to the total amount of carbon? the amount stays fixed
Carbon is part of what type of melecules? Energy storage molecules
What organisms perform photosynthesis? Producers, such as plants
What process do all organisms perform to release energy? Cellular respiration
If the amount of carbon in the air changes, can it affect other parts of an ecosystem? Yes. A change in one part of an ecosystem can affect all the other parts
Is Carbon moving into and out of the air at the same time? Yes
Where does the energy needed by organisms first enter an ecosystem? from the sun
How does energy from the sun enter an ecosystem? Plants take in light energy during photosynthesis
What happens to carbon dioxide in the air when trees are removed? less carbon dioxide is pulled from the air
Why does removing trees affect other living organisms? Less carbon is turned into energy storage molecules that are available to other living things
What are cells made of? Organelles
What is an organelle? a structure inside a cell that performs a specific job
what is the function of the cell membrane? it surrounds and protects the cell and controls what enters and leaves the cell
What is cytoplasm? a jelly'like substance that holds the organelles in place
what organelle is called the "powerhouse of the cell"? the mitochondria
what takes place in the mitochondria? Cellular respiration
What is the job of the nucleus? it directs the activities of the cell.
What is the job of chloroplasts? they use sunlight to make food through photosynthesis
how are chloroplasts and mitochondria related? Chloroplasts make food, while mitochondria break down food to release usable energy
what is the chemical formula for glucose? C6 H12 O6
What is the chemical formula for oxygen? O2
What is the chemical formula for carbon dioxide? CO2
What is the chemical formula for water? H2O
What are the reactants of photo synthesis? Carbon dioxide and water
What are the products of photosynthesis? Glucose and oxygen
During photosynthesis, where does the carbon in glucose come from? Carbon dioxide in the air
What is the equation for photosynthesis? 6CO₂ + 6H₂O + light energy → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
