QuestionAnswer
Element A pure substance that can not be broken down into another substance and is made out of only one atom
Compound A pure substance that consists of two or more elements that are chemically combined
Metals A material that is typically hard, shiny, and is a good conductor of heat and electricity
Nonmetals Are not able to conduct electricity or heat. Right hand side of the periodic table
Metalloids A chemical element with properties in between, or that area of mixture of metals and nonmetals. Staircase in periodic table.
Protons A subatomic particle with a positive charge found in the nucleus
Neutrons A subatomic particle with no charge found in the nucleus
Electrons A subatomic particle with a negative charge found on the outer rings (electron shells)
Nucleus Where protons and neutrons are located
Atomic number An elements place in the periodic table
Atomic mass The weight of an element
Periods Go horizontal on the periodic table and all have the same amount of electron shells
Groups Go vertical on the periodic table and reacts the same way
Electron shells The outer shells of the nucleus and where the electrons are located
Conductor Helps travel things like heat and electricity
7 Noble Gases Helium, Neon, Argon, Krypton, Xenon, Radon, and Oganesson
Mixture A mixture is a combination of 2 or more different substances which are mixed, but NOT chemically combined
Physical Properties •Color •Odor •Phase •Shape • Heat & electrical conductivity • Boiling, freezing points • Texture • Density
Chemical Properties 1. Flammability: ability to burn •2. Reactivity: ability to combine •3. Rusting: (Iron + water iron oxide) •4. Corrosion: metal chemically reacts with substance
Physical change •Keeps chemical composition and properties •Does not produce a new substance
Chemical Change Chemical reaction •Form new substances with DIFFERENT properties
Solutions “Best mixed” • Small and dissolved particles
Solute substance that does the dissolving
Melting A change in state that occurs when particles speed up and change from a solid to liquid
Boiling A rapid change in state that occurs throughout a substance changing it from a liquid to a gas
Freezing A change in state that occurs when the temperature of particles has decreased energy and a liquid turns into a solid
Sublimation A change in state directly from a solid to a gas
Deposition The change in state directly from a gas to a solid state
Evaporation A change in state that occurs as particles from the surface of a liquid change to a gas

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
