| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| 1 Earth system | a set of interactions between living and nonliving organisms on the planet |
| 2 Geosphere | the earth itself the rocks, minerals, and landforms of the surface and interior |
| 3 Hydrosphere | the total amount of water on a planet |
| 4 Cryosphere | the deintion of Cryoshpere is earth's ice in all its forms |
| 5 Atomoshpere | The atmosphere is a layer of gas and suspended solids extending from the Earth's surface up many thousands of miles |
| 6 Biosphere | the global sum of all ecosystems, encompassing all living organisms and their interactions with the environment |
| 7 Energy budget | the balance between the amount of energy incoming to Earth from he sun |
| 8 air pressure | The weight of the air in the atmosphere |
| 9 thermosphere | a layer of Earth's atmosphere that is directly above the mesosphere and below the exosphere |
| 10 mesosphere | a layer of Earth's atmosphere |
| 11 stratosphere | the second-lowest layer of Earth's atmosphere, located above the troposphere and below the mesosphere. |
| 12 troposphere | the lowest layer of Earth's atmosphere |
| 13 ozone layer | sits in the stratosphere between 15 km and 30 km above the earth and shields us and other living things from the sun's harmful ultraviolet radiation. |
| 14 greenhouse effect | the process through which heat is trapped near Earth's surface by substances known as 'greenhouse gases. |
| 15 temperature | the measure of hotness or coldness expressed in terms of any of several scales, including Fahrenheit and Celsius. |
| 16 thermal energy | energy within a system that's created by the random motion of molecules and atoms |
| 17 Thermal expansion | the increase or expansion of materials as a function of heat |
| 18 heat | the form of energy that is transferred between two substances at different temperatures |
| 19 radiation | energy that moves from one place to another in a form that can be described as waves or particles |
| 20 convection | the movement of fluid molecules from warmer to cooler regions |
| 21 conduction | the process by which heat energy is transmitted through collisions between neighboring atoms or molecules |
| 22 wind | the movement of air molecules in the atmosphere, or more generally, the flow of any gases |
| 23 Coriolis effect | makes things (like planes or currents of air) traveling long distances around the Earth appear to move at a curve as opposed to a straight line |
| 24 global wind | caused by the uneven heating of Earth's surface |
| 25 jet stream | a fast, narrow current of air flowing from west to east that encircles the globe |
| 26 local wind | air that flows over a smaller area of the Earth due to differences in air pressure |
| 27 ocean current | the movement of water from one location to another |
| 28 surface current | horizontal movements of ocean water driven by wind friction, gravity, and density variations |
| 29 deep current | ocean currents that involve vertical as well as horizontal movements of seawater |
| 30 convection current | fluid motion induced by density differences caused by temperature variations, facilitating heat transfer without external flow. |
| 31 upwelling | a process in which deep, cold water rises toward the surface |
