| Term | Definition |

| narrator | the person or voice that tells the story |
| point of view | the perspective from which a story is told |
| omniscient | a point of view where the narrator knows everything, including the thoughts and feelings of all characters. |
| limited | A point of view where the narrator knows the thoughts and feelings of only one character (or a limited number of characters). |
| setting | the time and place where a story happens |
| character | a person, animal, or other being who takes part in a story |
| characterization | the way an author develops and shows what a character is like |
| direct characterization | when the author directly tells the reader what a character is like |
| indirect characterization | when the author shows what a character is like through their actions, words, thoughts, feelings, and how others react to them. |
