typhoons tropical cyclone that forms in the Northwestern Pacific and spins in a counter-clockwise direction
latitudes location of 5 degrees to 20 degrees latitude is where tropical cyclones form mostly
ocean currents continuous directed movements of seawater; warm ocean currents provide a source of energy that fuel tropical cyclones
low pressure system warm water evaporates and rises into the atmosphere, becoming less dense and lessening pressure on the earth; associated with stormy unsettled weather; causes more air to be drawn in from surrounding areas
coriolis effect rotation of the earth which cause the rising air to spin around the low pressure center
wind shear change in wind speed and direction with height in the atmosphere
low wind shear little/small change in wind speed or direction over a short vertical distance. Allows tropical storms to form and expand.
high wind shear large changes in wind speed or direction over a short vertical distance. Slows a tropical storms ability to form and expand
tropical depression storms that have wind speeds less than or equal to 38 mph
tropical storm storms that have wind speeds between 39-73 mph
storm surge strong winds of a tropical storm pushing water toward the shore; usually the most damaging part of a hurricane
