| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cytoplasm | area between plasma membrane and nucleus (most metabolic reactions occur here) |
| cell membrane | consists of phospholipids and embedded proteins, regulates entrance and exit |
| organelles | structures within the cell that have certain responsibilities |
| Endoplasmic reticulum | complex system of of transport canals and channels |
| Rough ER | has ribosomes on it that make proteins |
| Smooth ER | no ribosomes |
| golgi body | packs and transfers/delivers proteins to vesicles |
| mitochondria | powerhouse of the cell, harvest energy from food and turn it into ATP |
| Lysosomes | contain enzymes, known as the suicide sac, speeds up reactions |
| centrosome | 2 cylinders that lie perpendicular in cell division, "form a spindle" |
| cytoskeleton | made of microtubules and microfilaments that gives support and shape |
| nucleus | directs all cell activity |
