| constitution | a written/unwritten doc that is the fundamental law of the nation. it specifies the officed to be filled as well as the authority that ea should exercise. a rule book |
| majestic vagueness | a term to describe the constitution as a beautiful, grand, amazing document that we follow and uphold but that is not specific |
| legal constitutionalism | adapting the constitution to reflect different values at different times |
| separation of powers | refers to the divisions of assignment so that Congress is in charge of making law, the executive is in charge of enforcing the laws, and the judiciary is in charge of interpreting the laws |
| checks and balances | The idea that each of the branches checks on the others so that no branch is stronger |
| bicameral legislature | a type of legislature that is divided into two separate assemblies, chambers, or houses |
| original jurisdiction | a court's authority to hear and decide a case for the first time before any appellate review occurs |
| the state of the union | Annual report by the president of the US |
| impeachment | a process by which a legislative body or other legally constituted tribunal initiates charges against a public official for misconduct |
| full faith and credit clause | addresses the duty that states within the United States have to respect the "public acts, records, and judicial proceedings of every other state" |
| amendment | a change to the constitution |
| supremacy clause | establishes that the U.S. constitution, federal laws, and treaties override all state laws that conflict with them |
