chapter 5
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| EPIDERMIS | outermost layer |
| EPIDERMIS | Consists of epithelial tissue and is avascular |
| DERMIS | underlies epidermis & makes up bulk of skin |
| DERMIS | Mostly dense connective tissue, vascular |
| Subcutaneous tissue | HYPODERMIS |
| HYPODERMIS | Mostly adipose tissue with some areolar tissue |
| HYPODERMIS | Loosely anchors skin to underlying structures |
| HYPODERMIS | Shock absorption and insulation |
| Cells found in the epidermis | Keratinocytes, melanocytes, dendritic cells, and merkel cells |
| KERATINOCYTES | Produce fibrous keratin |
| KERATINOCYTES | Major cells of epidermis |
| KERATINOCYTES | Millions slough off every day producing a new epidermis every 25–45 days |
| MELANOCYTES | Spider-shaped cells located in deepest epidermis |
| MELANOCYTES | Produce pigment melanin, which is packaged into melanosomes |
| MELANOCYTES | Melanosomes are transferred to keratinocytes; melanin protects keratinocyte nucleus from U V damage |
| DENTRITIC CELLS | Star-shaped macrophages that patrol deep epidermis |
| DENTRITIC CELLS | Ingest foreign substances and are key activators of the inmune system |
| MERKEL CELLS | Sensory receptor to touch located at epidermal-dermal junction |
