Earth systems
unit 10
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Earth system | all of the matter, energy, and processes within Earth’s boundary. |
| geosphere | the mostly solid, rocky part of Earth. |
| hydrosphere | the part of Earth that is liquid water. |
| cryosphere | made up of all of the frozen water on Earth |
| atmosphere | mostly made of invisible gases that surround Earth. |
| biosphere | made up of living things and the areas of Earth |
| energy budget | a way to keep track of energy transfers into and out of the Earth system. |
| air pressure | the measure of the force with which air molecules push on an area of a surface. |
| thermosphere | the uppermost layer of the atmosphere. |
| mesosphere | between the thermosphere and stratosphere. |
| stratosphere | between the mesosphere and troposphere. |
| troposphere | the lowest layer of the atmosphere. |
| ozone layer | an area in the stratosphere, |
| greenhouse effect | the process by which gases in the atmosphere, such as water vapor and carbon dioxide, absorb and give off infrared radiation. |
| temperature | a measure of the average kinetic energy of particles. |
| thermal energy | the total kinetic energy of particles. |
| thermal expansion | The increase in volume that results from an increase in temperature |
| heat | the energy that is transferred between objects that are at different temperatures. |
| radiation | the transfer of energy as electromagnetic waves |
| convection | the transfer of energy due to the movement of matter. |
| conduction | the transfer of energy from one object to another object through direct contact. |
| wind | Air moves from areas of higher pressure toward areas of lower pressure. The movement of air caused by differences in air pressure is called wind. The greater the differences in air pressure, the faster the air moves |
| Coriolis effect | The apparent curving of the path of a moving object from an otherwise straight path due to Earth’s rota- tion |
| global wind | These wind systems occur at or near Earth’s surface and are called global winds |
| jet stream | are narrow belts of high-speed winds that blow from west to east, between 7 km and 16 km above Earth’s surface. |
| local wind | the movement of air over short distances. They can blow from any direction, depending on the features of the area. |
| ocean current | The oceans contain streamlike movements of water |
| surface current | Ocean currents that occur at or near the surface of the ocean, caused by wind, are called surface currents. |
| deep current | Movements of ocean water far below the surface are called deep currents. |
| convection current | Movements of ocean water far below the surface are called deep currents. |
| upwelling | The warm surface water is then replaced by cold, nutrient-rich water from the deep ocean in a process called upwelling. |
