Chapter 3 bio

QuestionAnswer
Explain the difference between organic and inorganic compounds and how they relate to living things Organic- contained in carbon; in living things Inorganic- do not have carbon
What's the difference between ATP and ADP ATP- has three phosphate groups ADP- has two phosphate groups ATP has more energy
What is an isomer Same chemical formula but different structure
Name two foods that contain high amounts of protein Meat, eggs, nuts, beans, peanut butter
What is it called when two amino acids are joined together Dipeptide
Why is carbon used so often in living things Can form up to four covalent bonds bonds well with other elements occurring in life can form single, double, or triple bonds
Does a hydrolysis reaction take in energy or release it Releases energy
What is the monomer for carbohydrates called Monosaccharide
Give three examples of things found in living organisms that are made of proteins. Enzymes, hormones (insulin), horns, nails, hair (keratin), muscles
Explain the difference between the lock and key model and the induced fit model for enzymes Lock and Key- enzymes fit perfectly with the substrate Induced fit- the enzyme changes shape to fit the substrate
List the four functional groups and their formulas Hydroxyl - OH Carboxyl - COOH Amino - NH2 Phosphate - PO4
Draw the ATP cycle and label what is happening. ATP loses the 3rd phosphate and releases energy. Now that it has only 2 phosphates, it is ADP. ADP then gets energy from food and the 3rd phosphate rejoins creating ATP
What are the three monosaccharide isomers? Glucose Fructose Galactose
What is the monomer for proteins? Amino acids
What is a condensation reaction and how does water relate to it? Joining monomers to form polymers by losing H2O
What are the elements found in carbohydrates and in what ratio 1 Carbon : 2 Hydrogen : 1 Oxygen
Many monosaccharides linked together form a ... Polysaccharide
How many different amino acids are there? 20
What does it mean when an enzyme is denatured? Destroyed
Does a condensation reaction take in energy or release it? Takes in energy
What is a disaccharide? Two monosaccharides joined together
What are our three examples of polysaccharides? Starch Cellulose Glycogen
What is the name of the bond found in between amino acids? Peptide Bond
What is a hyrolysis reaction and how does it relate to water? Polymers split into monomers by adding H2O
What are the elements that are found in proteins? Carbon Hydrogen Oxygen Nitrogen
What are the two ways an enzyme can become denatured? High temperature & pH
Carbohydrates are our main source of... Energy
What are the three disaccharides? (Include the monosaccharides that they are made up of) Glucose + Fructose = Sucrose Glucose + Galactose = Lactose Glucose + Glucose = Maltose
What are the two main functions of proteins? Structure & defense

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
