Chapter 2
Neuro SLHS
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Dura Mater | Toughest, outermost layer of the brain - surrounds entire brain, and separates hemispheres and cerebrum from cerebellum |
| Extensions of dura mater | - Falx cerebri - Falx cerebelli - Tentorium cerebelli |
| Dura mater (purpose) | prevents blood from passing through to the subdural (beneath the dura) space |
| two layers of dura mater | - Periosteal layer - Meningeal layer |
| Periosteal Layer | adheres to the inner surface of the cranium and spinal column |
| Miningeal layer | adheres to the adjacent arachnoid layer |
| normal conditions of dura mater | should be no space between the periostea dura mater and bones that protect the CNS |
| Arachnoid membrane | -Delicate middle meningeal layer - connective tissue and squamous epithelial cells - extends moderately into sulk well into fissure s - subarachnoid space between it an spa mater is filled with csf |
| Subarachnoid space | - filled with css -arachnoid granulations = arachnoid membrane protrudes through the dura mater into the sinuses - Allow for CSF to be absorbed into the bloodstream after it has circulated around the CNS in the subarachnoid space |
| Pia Mater (gentle mother) | - Barely visible to the unaided eye as a separate layer - highly vascularized with capillaries and small blood vessels - extends deep into all sulky coating entire cortex |
