Force Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Force | Push or pull that can make an object move or change direction or stop |
| Balanced Force | Forces that have the same strength and act in opposite directions, resulting in NO CHANGE IN MOTION |
| Unbalanced Force | Forces that have different strengths an act in opposite directions, causing changes in motion |
| Inertia / Newton's 1st Law | The tendency of an object to resist changes in its motion. An object in rest wants to stay at rest, an object in motion wants to keep moving in the same direction and at the same speed unless acted on by an external force |
| Transfer | The movement or conversion of something, such as energy or heat, from one object or system to another |
| Friction | The force that resist motion of objects that are in contact with each other. It can make objects slow down or come to a stop |
| Gravity | The force that pulls objects towards each other. It is what keeps us on the ground and causes objects to fall when dropped |
| Magnetism | The force of attraction or repulsion between magnets or magnetic materials |
| Attract | To pull or draw objects towards each other |
| Repel | To push or force objects away from each other due to a force of repulsion |
| Mass | The amount of matter an object contains. it determines an object's resistance to changes in motion |
| Constant | Something that stays the same and does not change during an experiment |
| Variable | Something that can change or be changed during an experiment or observation |
| Spring Scale | A tool used to measure the force exerted on an object. It uses the stretching or compression of a spring to indicate the force applied. We use Newtons for unit of Measure |
| Postition | The location of an object |
| Motion | A change in position |
| Independent Variable | The variable that changes, get measured |
| Dependent Variable | The variable that is caused by the independent variable. |
