| Osteo- | a word part that means bone. |
| Long Bones | bones that are longer than they are wide. They help with movement and support. Example: femur and humerus. |
| Short Bones | small, cube-shaped bones that provide support and stability. Example: wrist and ankle bones. |
| Flat Bones | thin, flat bones that protect organs and provide places for muscles to attach. Example: skull, ribs, and sternum. |
| Irregular Bones | bones with complex or unusual shapes that do not fit into the other bone categories. Example: vertebrae. |
| Diaphysis | the long, main shaft of a long bone. |
| Epiphysis | the rounded ends of a long bone. |
| Epiphyseal Line | a line of bone that marks where the growth plate used to be after a bone stops growing longer. |
| Metaphysis | the area between the diaphysis and epiphysis where bone growth occurs in a growing person. |
| Medullary Cavity | the hollow space inside the shaft of a long bone that contains bone marrow. |
| Yellow Bone Marrow | fatty tissue found mainly in the medullary cavity of adult long bones; it stores energy as fat. |
| Periosteum | a tough layer of connective tissue covering the outside of a bone. |
| Articular Cartilage | smooth cartilage covering the ends of bones at joints; it reduces friction and cushions movement. |
| Spongy Bone | lightweight bone found inside many bones. It has a porous structure that makes bones lighter while still providing strength. |
| Trabeculae | thin, branching pieces of bone that form the framework of spongy bone. |
| Red Bone Marrow | tissue that produces blood cells. It is found inside spaces within spongy bone. |
| Compact Bone | the hard, dense outer layer of bone that provides strength and protection. |
| Osteon | the basic structural unit of compact bone. It is made of rings of bone tissue surrounding a central canal. |
| Haversian Canal | a central passageway in an osteon that contains blood vessels and nerves. |
| osteocyte | a mature bone cell that maintains and monitors bone tissue. |
| Osteoblast | a cell that builds new bone. |
| Osteoclast | a cell that breaks down old or damaged bone. |
| Canaliculi | tiny channels that connect bone cells and allow them to exchange nutrients and waste. |
| Lamellae | thin layers or rings of bone tissue that surround the Haversian canal. |
| Endosteum | a thin layer of connective tissue that lines the inside surfaces of bones, including the medullary cavity. |
| Lacuna | a small space in bone tissue where an osteocyte is located. |
| Blood Vessels | tubes that carry blood, oxygen, and nutrients to and from bone tissue. |
| Arterioles | small branches of arteries that carry blood toward tissues. |
| Venules | small branches of veins that carry blood away from tissues. |
