Vocab 1.1.4 - Long Bones & Osteon
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| osteo | Prefix relating to bones |
| Long Bones | Bones that are longer than they are wide (e.g., femur, humerus) |
| Short Bones | Cube-shaped bones providing stability and support with limited movement (e.g., carpals, tarsals). |
| Flat Bones | Thin, flattened, and usually curved bones that protect internal organs (e.g., skull, ribs). |
| Irregular Bones | Bones with complex, unique shapes that do not fit other categories (e.g., vertebrae, hip bones). |
| Diaphysis | The main shaft or central section of a long bone. |
| Epiphysis | The expanded end part of a long bone. |
| Epiphyseal Line | The remnant of the epiphyseal plate (growth plate) in an adult bone. |
| Metaphysis | The narrow portion of a long bone between the epiphysis and the diaphysis. |
| Medullary Cavity | The central cavity of bone shafts where bone marrow is stored. |
| Yellow Bone Marrow | Bone marrow high in fat cells, functioning primarily as energy storage. |
| Periosteum | Dense layer of vascular connective tissue enveloping the bones |
| Articular Cartilage | Smooth, white tissue covering the ends of bones where they come together to form joints. |
| Spongy Bone | Porous, light inner bone tissue containing trabeculae. |
| Trabeculae | Supporting bundles of fibers forming a meshwork in spongy bone. |
| Red Bone Marrow | Specialized tissue producing red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. |
| Osteon | The fundamental functional unit of compact bone. |
| Haversian Canal | Central channel containing blood vessels and nerves in an osteon. |
| Osteocyte | A mature bone cell that maintains bone tissue. |
| Osteoblast | A bone-forming cell that secretes the bone matrix. |
| Osteoclast | A large cell that absorbs and breaks down bone tissue during growth and healing. |
| Canaliculi | Tiny microscopic canals that connect lacunae, allowing nutrients and wastes to pass between osteocytes. |
| Lamellae | Concentric rings or layers of hard, calcified matrix in bone tissue. |
| Endosteum | A thin vascular membrane lining the inner cavity and central canals of a bone. |
| Lacuna | Small cavities in bone matrix that contain individual osteocytes. |
| Blood Vessels | Tubular structures (arteries, veins, capillaries) that transport blood throughout the body and bone tissue. |
| Arterioles | Small branches of arteries that lead into capillaries to deliver oxygenated blood. |
| Venules | Small blood vessels that collect blood from capillaries and drain into veins. |
