How are technology and cultural convergence related? Technology exposes people in different places to the same ideas, products, entertainment, and trends, which can make cultures more similar.
Does cultural convergence mean all cultures become identical? No. Cultures may share more traits while still maintaining distinct identities, languages, traditions, and beliefs.
Why do geographers study diffusion? It helps explain how cultural traits move across space and why places change culturally over time.
Scenario: A chef moves to another country and opens a restaurant serving food from home. Relocation diffusion.
Scenario: Students spread a slang term throughout a school by talking with friends. Contagious diffusion.
Scenario: A fashion style spreads outward from a major city but remains popular in the city where it began. Expansion diffusion.
Scenario: People across several continents begin using similar clothing styles and entertainment. Cultural convergence.
Scenario: A global restaurant chain opens locations in dozens of countries. Cultural diffusion influenced by a transnational corporation.
Scenario: Faster air travel increases contact among countries. Transportation technology increasing cultural diffusion.
Scenario: A remote group has little outside contact because of mountains. Limited cultural diffusion caused by geographic isolation.
Scenario: A cultural idea spreads but the people who created it stay in their original location. Expansion diffusion.
