Sexual reproduction diagram a biological process where two parent organisms combine their genetic material to create a genetically unique offspring
Spontaneous generation charteristces obsolete scientific theory that living organisms can develop directly from nonliving matter
Autotroph evolution an organism that makes its own food using simple inorganic substances and an external energy source.
Heteroph an organism that cannot make its own food and must get its energy and nutrients by consuming other living or dead organisms
Classiflcation the process of arranging objects, data, or organisms into groups or categories based on shared characteristics.
Taxonomy the branch of science concerned with naming, describing, and classifying living and extinct organisms into hierarchical groups based on shared characteristics and evolutionary relationships
Binomial nomenclature Binomial nomenclature is a universal two-part naming system used in biology to give every species a unique scientific name.
Genus taxonomic rank in biology that groups together closely related species.
species the basic biological unit of classification grouping organisms that can potentially interbreed and produce fertile offspring.
Prokaryote a single-celled organism that does not have a distinct nucleus or other membrane-bound parts.
Eukaryote any organism whose cells contain a distinct, membrane-bound nucleus and other specialized, internal compartments called organelle
Nucleus the membrane-enclosed command center of a eukaryotic cell.
Evolution the change in the inherited traits of a biological population over successive generations
Branching tree diagram a visual tool that starts with a single starting point and splits into multiple paths or categories, looking like the trunk and branches of a tree.
Shared derived characteristics new physical or genetic characteristics that evolved in a recent common ancestor and are shared by its descendants.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
