Classification VOCAB
| Organism | any individual living system, |
| Cell | the smallest, basic unit of life that can live on its own and makes up all living organisms |
| Unicellular | a living thing that is made up of only one cell |
| Multicellular | a living thing made up of more than one cell with different types of specialized cells |
| Metabolism | the set of chemical reactions in your body that change food and drink into energy |
| Stimulus | anything that rouses an action, provokes a response, or encourages economic growth |
| Response | something said, written, or done as an answer or reaction to a question, event, or stimulus |
| Development | the act, process, or result of growing, expanding, and changing into a more advanced, mature, or useful state. |
| Asexual reproduction | a type of reproduction that creates offspring from a single parent without the fusion of gametes (sex cells) or a change in chromosome number |
| Sexual reproduction | a biological process where two parents combine their genetic material to create a genetically unique offspring |
| Spontaneous generation | the discarded scientific theory that living organisms can develop directly from nonliving matter |
| Autotroph | an organism that makes its own food using simple inorganic substances and an external energy source |
| Heterotroph | an organism that cannot make its own food and must get its energy and nutrients by consuming other living or dead organisms |
| Classification | the systematic arrangement of objects, data, or organisms into pre-existing groups or categories based on shared characteristics |
| Taxonomy | the science and practice of classifying, naming, and organizing things or concepts into structured, hierarchical groups based on shared characteristics |
| Binomial nomenclature | a universal two-part naming system used in biology to give every species a unique scientific name |
| Genus | a taxonomic rank that sits directly above species and below family. |
| Species | the basic unit of classification and a taxonomic rank for living organisms |
| Prokaryote | a single-celled organism that does not have a distinct nucleus or other membrane-bound internal parts |
| Eukaryote | any organism whose cells contain a distinct, membrane-bound nucleus and other internal compartments called organelles |
| Nucleus | a central control structure, most commonly known as the membrane-enclosed organelle in eukaryotic cells that stores genetic material |
| Evolution | the change in the heritable characteristics of biological populations over successive generations |
| Branching tree diagram | a visual tool that maps out structural hierarchies, sequential events, or decision pathways by starting at a single origin and splitting into multiple options |
| Shared derived characteristics | new biological features shared by two or more groups of organisms and inherited from their most recent common ancestor |
| convergent evolution | the biological process where unrelated or distantly related species independently evolve similar physical traits or behaviors because they live in similar environments or face identical ecological challenges |
