CS 3354 CH1

QuestionAnswer
What is software? Computer programs and their associated documentation. It can be part of a larger system, and documentation provides information about the software over time.
What are the two primary categories of software products used to distinguish software based on market and delivery model? Generic products (stand-alone, sold to any customer; developer owns the specification) and customized products (commissioned by one customer; customer owns the specification).
What is Software Engineering? An engineering discipline concerned with all aspects of software production, from specification through maintenance after use. Uses appropriate theories and methods within organizational and financial constraints.
What is the distinction between computer science and software engineering? CS focuses on the theory and fundamentals of computation (algorithms, limits, hardware). SE is applied: building, delivering, and maintaining useful software. Trade-offs are needed when theory and practice differ.
What is the difference between system engineering and software engineering? System engineering covers all aspects of computer-based systems: hardware, software, and user processes. Software engineering focuses only on the software and is part of the broader system engineering process.
What are the attributes of good software? Maintainability (evolves with changing needs), dependability and security (reliable, safe, secure), efficiency (no wasted memory or processor cycles), and acceptability (understandable, usable, compatible with other systems).
What are the key challenges facing software engineering? Increasing diversity and complexity (many devices, new capabilities), quick responsiveness or delivery (businesses will not wait years), and trustworthy software (reliable, resilient to attack).
Identify and categorize five distinct classes of software systems. Any five of the eight application types: stand-alone, interactive transaction-based, embedded control, batch processing, entertainment, modelling and simulation, data collection, systems of systems.
What are three key characteristics of the engineering of web-based software engineering? 1) Web services: functionality is accessed over the web. 2) Cloud computing: apps run remotely and users pay per use. 3) New advances: programming languages, deployment and maintenance techniques, software reuse.
What is a software engineering code of ethics? Principles of ethical practice produced by ACM/IEEE-CS that members sign up to. Eight principles: Public, Client and Employer, Product, Judgment, Management, Profession, Colleagues, Self.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
