Termdefinition
Organism any individual living thing that can function on its own
Cell the basic building block and smallest unit of life that can live on its own
Unicellular having or consisting of a single cell.
Multicellular an organism is composed of more than one cell, with different cells working together to perform specialized functions.
Metabolism the complete set of chemical processes in your body's cells that turn food and drink into energy and building blocks to keep you alive
Stimulus anything that causes a physical, behavioral, or functional reaction
Response an answer or a reaction to a question, an event, or any other type of stimulus
Development the process of growing, changing, or improving to become more advanced, larger, or mature
Asexual reproduction a type of reproduction that creates offspring from a single parent without the fusion of sex cells or gametes
Sexual reproduction a biological process where genetic material from two parents combines to create a genetically unique offspring
Spontaneous generation the discarded scientific theory that living organisms can develop directly and routinely from nonliving matter without parents, seeds, or eggs
Autotroph an organism that produces its own food from simple inorganic substances using light or chemical energy
Heterotroph an organism that cannot make its own food and must consume other plants, animals, or organic matter for energy and nutrients
Classification the process of arranging items, data, or organisms into groups or categories based on shared characteristics or set rules
Taxonomy the science and practice of naming, describing, and classifying groups of living organisms or other things based on shared characteristics
Binomial nomenclature the formal, universal two-part naming system used in Biology Online to identify every species of living thing
Genus a principal taxonomic rank in biological classification that sits above species and below family, grouping together closely related species that share common physical or genetic characteristics
Species the basic unit of biological classification and a group of living organisms that can breed together and produce fertile offspring
Prokaryote a tiny, single-celled organism that does not have a true nucleus or internal membrane-bound parts
Eukaryote living organisms made of complex cells that contain a membrane-bound nucleus and other specialized, membrane-bound structures called organelles
Nucleus the command center of a eukaryotic cell that stores DNA
Evolution a gradual process of change and development into a different, often more complex, form
Branching tree diagram a visual tool that uses a single starting point to split into multiple paths, showing how categories, decisions, or biological species connect to one another
Shared derived characteristics a trait that evolved in a common ancestor and is shared by the members of a specific evolutionary group, or clade, but is absent in more distant ancestors
Convergent evolution the independent development of similar features or traits in unrelated or distantly related species

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
