QuestionAnswer
Organism any individual living system
Cell the basic structural and functional unit of all living organisms
Unicellular a living thing that is made up of only one cell
Multicellular living thing made up of more than one cell with different types of specialized cells
Metabolism the set of chemical reactions in your body that change food and drink into energy
Stimulus anything that rouses an action, provokes a response, or encourages economic growth
response a specific action, movement, or physiological change that an organism or cell makes when it detects a stimulus
Development the series of structural, functional, and physiological changes an organism undergoes till it becomes a adult
aAsexual reproduction a type of reproduction that creates offspring from a single parent without the fusion of gametes (sex cells) or a change in chromosome number
Sexual reproduction a biological process where two parents combine their genetic material to create a genetically unique offspring
Spontaneous generation the discarded scientific theory that living organisms can develop directly from nonliving matter
Autotroph an organism that makes its own food using simple inorganic substances and an external energy source
Heterotroph an organism that cannot make its own food and must get its energy and nutrients by consuming other living or dead organisms
Classification the scientific process of grouping living and extinct organisms based on shared physical features and evolutionary history
Taxonomy the science and practice of classifying, naming, and organizing things or living organisms into groups based on shared characteristics
Binomial nomenclature a formal two-part naming system used in taxonomy to give every species a unique, universally recognized scientific name
Genus a principal taxonomic rank used in the biological classification of living and fossil organisms, positioning itself directly above species and below family
Species a group of individual organisms that can interbreed in nature to produce viable, fertile offspring
Prokaryote a single-celled organism that does not have a distinct nucleus or other membrane-bound internal parts
Eukaryote any organism whose cells contain a distinct, membrane-bound nucleus and other internal compartments called organelles
Nucleus a central control structure, most commonly known as the membrane-enclosed organelle in eukaryotic cells that stores genetic material
Evolution the change in inherited traits of living populations over successive generations
Branching tree diagram a visual tool that starts with a single starting point and splits into multiple paths or categories, looking like the trunk and branches of a tree
Shared derived characteristics new biological features shared by two or more groups of organisms and inherited from their most recent common ancestor
Convergent evolution the biological process where unrelated or distantly related species independently evolve similar physical traits or behaviors because they live in similar environments or face identical ecological challenges

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
