HAN 202 Lymphoid
Lymphoid System
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| lymphoid system | consisting of organs and network of vessels, recovers fluid from he body, inspects it, activates immune responses |
| lymphoid system functions | fluid recovery, immune surveillance, lipid absorption |
| fluid recovery | returns interstitial fluid back to the blood |
| immune surveillance | excess filtered fluid picks up foreign cells and chemicals from the tissues, lymph nodes activates a protective immune response |
| lipid absorption | lacteals, chyle |
| lymph | fluid recovered by lymphatic vessels, originates in body tissue, filtered out by blood capillaries, clear and colorless |
| lymphatic vessels | system in which lymph flows through |
| lymphatic pathway | capillaries, collecting vessles, trunks, collecting ducts |
| lymphatic capillaries | anchoring filaments, intercellular clefts |
| chyle | formed of lymph and fats from the small intestine during digestion |
| flow of lymh | similar to blood flow but slower, less pressure, reliant of vessel stretching |
| glymphatic system | lymphatic resembling vessels in the brain, associated with neuroglia, intracerebral arteries and veins surrounded by cerebrospinal fluid and interstitial fluid |
| lymphoid tissue | aggregation of lymphocytes in the connective tissue of mucous membranes and organs |
| diffuse lymphoid tissue | scattered lymphocytes, in body passages open to external environment |
| lymphoid nodules/follicles | lymphocytes and macrophages in dense masses, aggregated lymphoid nodules |
| primary lymphoid organs | where T and B cells become immunocompetent, include red bone marrow and thymus |
| red bone marrow | located in acial skeleton, shoulder/hip girdle, proximal epiphysis, responsible for hematopoiesis and immunity, |
| thymus | superior to mediastinum, houses developing T cells, deteriorates with age |
| secondary lymphoid organs | where immunocompetent cells migrate to and populate, includes lymph nodes, tonsils, spleen |
| lymph nodes | cleanes lymph, site of lymphocyte activation |
| lymph node locations | cervical, axillary, thoracis, abdominal, intestinal, inguinal, popliteal |
| cancer metastasis | cencer cells travel from primary tumopr and travel to other sites in the body, spreads through lymph system |
| tonsils | entrance to the pharynx, protect against ingested or inhaled pathogens |
| spleen | largest lymphoid organs, left upper quadrant, erythrocyte graveyard, stabilizes blood volume through plasma transfers to lymphoid system |
