Position Prepositions

PrepositionMeaning
Above higher than something, but not touching it
Across from one side of something to the other, lying over it
against touching something, usually for support or pressure
Among in the middle of a group of things
Around surrounding something; on all sides of it
Behind at the back of something
Below lower than something in level or position, not necessarily directly beneath
Beneath directly under something; underneath it
Beside at the side of something; next to it
By beside or very close to something
In inside something; within a container or space (position)
In front of facing something; ahead of it
Inside within a container or enclosed space
Near close to something, but not necessarily directly beside
Next to immediately beside something
On touching and supported by a surface, on top of it (position)
Outside not inside; beyond the limits of something
Over above something, often covering it
Through from one side to the other, passing inside something
Under directly beneath something, often covered or hidden by it
Underneath directly beneath something, emphasising that it is covered or hidden
Between in the space separating two things
