What is direct supervision? A qualified radiologic technologist is present with the student and directly observes and assists with the procedure.
What is indirect supervision? A qualified radiologic technologist is immediately available to assist the student when needed.
What does ALARA stand for? As Low As Reasonably Achievable.
What is the purpose of ALARA? To keep radiation exposure as low as reasonably achievable while still obtaining diagnostic-quality images.
What are the three basic principles of radiation protection? Time, distance, and shielding.
What is the SI unit for absorbed radiation dose? Gray (Gy)
What is the SI unit used for equivalent/effective dose? Sievert (Sv).
Which cells are generally most sensitive to radiation? Cells that divide rapidly and are less differentiated.
What is natural background radiation? Radiation naturally present in the environment from sources such as cosmic radiation and terrestrial materials.
What does SBAR stand for? Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation.
Why is effective communication important in radiology? It promotes patient safety, reduces misunderstandings, improves teamwork, and helps patients understand procedures.
What is the role of the ARRT? It establishes standards for certification and registration of radiologic technologists and administers certification examinations.
What is the role of the ASRT? It is a professional organization that provides education, advocacy, resources, and professional support for medical imaging and radiation therapy professionals.
What is the role of JRCERT? It accredits educational programs in radiography, radiation therapy, magnetic resonance, and medical dosimetry.
Why is continuing education important for radiologic technologists? It helps technologists maintain knowledge and skills as imaging technology, procedures, and professional standards change.
What are some ways a radiologic technologist can advance professionally? Additional education, experience, specialty certifications, continuing education, and training in other imaging modalities.
Why is collimation important in radiation protection? It limits the x-ray beam to the area of interest, reducing unnecessary patient exposure and scatter radiation.
How should a radiologic technology student approach clinical rotations? Be professional, communicate clearly, ask appropriate questions, accept feedback, follow safety procedures, and treat each clinical experience as an opportunity to learn.
