Unit 10 Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
Earth system A system is a group of related objects or parts that work together to form a whole.
Geosphere The geosphere is the mostly solid, rocky part of earth.
Hydrosphere The hydrosphere is the part of Earth that is liquid water.
Cryosphere Earth's cryosphere is made up of all of the frozen water on Earth.
Atmosphere The atmosphere is mostly made of invisible gases that surround Earth.
Biosphere The biosphere is made up of living things and the areas of Earth where they are found.
Energy budget Is the way to keep track of energy transfers into and out of the Earth system.
Air Pressure Is the measure of the force which air molecules push on an area of a surface.
Thermosphere Is the uppermost layer of the atmosphere.
Stratosphere Is between the thermosphere and Stratosphere .
Troposphere Is the lowest layer of the atmosphere.
Ozone Layer Is an area in the stratosphere, 15 km to 40 km above Earth's surface, where ozone is highly concentrated.
Greenhouse effect The Greenhouse effect is the process by which gases in the atmosphere, such as water vapor and carbon dioxide, absorb and give off infrared radiation.
Temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of particles.
Thermal Energy Thermal energy is the total kinetic energy of particles.
Thermal expansion The increase in volume that results from an increase in temperature.
Heat Is the energy that is transferred between objects that are at different temperatures.
Radiation Is the transfer of energy to Earth by radiation.
Convection Is the transfer of energy due to the movement of matter.
Conduction Is the transfer of energy from one object to another object through direct contact.
Wind The movement of air caused by differences in air pressure.
Coriolis Effect The apparent curving of path of a moving object from an otherwise straight path is due to Earths rotation.
Global Wind These wind systems occur at or near Earth's surface and are called global winds.
Jet Stream Are narrow belts of high-speed winds that blow form west to east, between 7km and 16 km above Earth's surface.
Local Wind Are the movement of air over short distances.
Ocean Current The oceans stream-like movements of water.
Surface current Ocean currents that occur at or near the surface of the ocean, caused by wind.
Deep Current Movements of ocean water far below the Earth's surface
Convection current Is a movement of water that results from density differences.
Upwelling The warm surface water is then replaced by cold, nutrient-rich water from the deep ocean.
Mesosphere Is the layer that is directly above the stratosphere.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
