Topic 1 and 2 Test

QuestionAnswer
What is a cell? The basic structural and functional unit of living organisms.
What is multicellular? A category of organisms made up of more than one cell and of different types of cells.
What is unicellular? A category of organisms made up of one cell.
What is a cell membrane? A lipid barrier that encloses the cytoplasm and controls what enters and exits the cell.
What is a cell wall? A tough protective barrier that surrounds the outer membrane of some types of cells.
What is a chloroplast? A membrane-bound organelle in plants that is the site of photosynthesis.
What is a function? What something does.
What are mitochondrion? The organelle that functions in energy production; the power factory of the cell.
What is the nucleus? A membrane-bound organelle in eukaryotic cells that contains the DNA; the control center of the cell.
What is an organelle? A structure inside a cell that performs a specialized function.
What is the smallest unit that can be considered alive? Cells
How are the function of chloroplasts and mitochondria related in plant cells? Chloroplast make food; mitochondria process the food and convert it into energy.
Students conducted an investigation to provide evidence to support the idea that trees were made up of different kinds of cells. Which of the following provides evidence which would support this idea? Cells from different parts of a single tree had varying structures and functions.
A plant gets its ability to stand up and have a shape from one part of its cells. The rigid sturdy outside of a plant cell that give a plant its shape is called the _________________. cell wall
How could a scientist tell if a new substance is living or nonliving? What tool could they use to prove this? If cells are present it is living. If no cells are present it is nonliving. A microscope can help identify if the new substance is composed of cells or not.
How does the structure of the cell membrane contribute to the overall function of a cell? It allows for the passage of certain substances into and out of the cell.
What is the relationship between cells and living things? All living things are made up of one or more cells.
The nucleus does a special job for the cell. The job of the nucleus in a cell is similar to the job of the ________________ in a city. City Hall (directs necessary activities throughout the city)
What are the TWO major jobs of the nucleus? Holds DNA (genetic information) to make new cells. Controls the activities of the cell.
The various different parts of a cell, called organelles, are beneficial to the cell in what way? Each part performs a unique and necessary function.
Are individual organelles (cell structures) living? No. Organelles themselves are not alive. Cells are the smallest unit that can be said to be alive and organelles are pieces inside the cell.
What is a TRUE statement about cells: Cells are the smallest unit that can be considered alive.
