Unit 10

QuestionAnswer
Wind The movement of air caused by differences in the air pressure
Coriolis effect The curving of the path of a moving object, from an otherwise straight path due to earth’s rotation
Global winds Coriolis effect produces patterns of calm areas and wind systems. These one systems occur at or near Earth surface.
Jet streams Narrow belts of high-speed winds that blow from west to east
Local winds Movement of air over short distances
Surface currents Ocean currents that occur at or near the surface of the ocean caused by wind
Ocean currents Stream like movements of water
Deep currents Movements of ocean water far below the surface
Convection currents Movement of water the results from density differences.
Upwelling Surface water is then replaced by cold nutrient rich water from the deep ocean.
Earth system The Earth system is all of the matter, energy and processes within earths boundaries
Geosphere Geosphere is the mostly solid rocky part of earth
Hydrosphere Part of earth that is liquid water
Cryosphere Made up of all of the frozen water on earth
Atmosphere Mostly made up of invisible gas that surrounds Earth.
Biosphere Made up of living things and areas of Earth
Energy budget Way to keep track of energy transferred into and out of the Earth system
Air pressure The measure of the force with which air molecules push on an area of a surface
Thermosphere The upmost layer of the atmosphere
Mesosphere The muscle sphere is between the thermosphere and the stratosphere
Stratosphere The stratosphere is between the mesosphere and the troposphere
Troposphere Troposphere is the lowest layer of the atmosphere
Ozone layer Is an area in the stratosphere
Greenhouse effect The greenhouse effect is the process by which gases in the atmosphere such as water vapor and carbon dioxide absorb and give up infrared radiation
Temperature Temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of particles
Thermal energy Thermal energy is a total kinetic energy of particles
Thermal expansion The increase on volume that results from an increase of temperature is called a thermal expansion
Heat He is the energy that has transferred between objects that are at different temperatures
Radiation Radiation is the transfer of energy as electromagnetic waves
Convection Convection is a transfer of energy due to the movement of matter
Conduction Conduction is a transfer energy from one object to another through direct contact

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
