QuestionAnswer
is water polar or nonpolar polar: it can form hydrogen bonds
properties of water molecule assymetrical structure
water has covalent bonds meaning they have shared ____ between what 2 elements. shared electrons between oxygen and hydrogen
what are the characteristics of water's polar covalent bond? enequally charged atoms (oxygen is partially negative) & (hydrogen is partially positively charged)
how is a hydrogen bond formed? (which molecules attract each other?) the partially negative oxygen atom and partially positive hydrogen atom attract to each other (as water molecules attract other water molecules)
what is cohesion / adhesion + example? water molecules attract other water molecules / polar molecules attract other polar molecules (ex. high surface tension + capillary action in plants)
why does water have a high specific heat? due to forming hydrogen bonds, its harder to separate water molecules that are attracted to each other (why it takes so long for water to change phases) (ex. sweat evaporating on body)
water has a high heat capacity which affects what in climates? this moderates the climate; water can absorb + release a lot of energy which helps stabalize temperatures
compare the spacing between water molecules in its solid vs. liquid state. solid water: particles are further apart than in a liquid (this is why ice is less dense n can float)
water is an excellent solvent that can _______ dissolve many ionic compounds and other polar molecules
a pH of 7 is _____ a pH greater than 7 is ______ a pH less than 7 is _____ - neutral - basic - acidic
what are buffers? they form acids or bases as a result of changing pH levels in order to maintain constant levels
difference between polar covalent bonds and hydrogen bonding? - polar covalent bonds are what holds 1 single water molecule tgr - hydrogen bonding is what allows 1 water molecule to bond to a *different water molecule

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
