Solutions

QuestionAnswer
mixture substances mixed together; NOT chemically bonded
heterogeneous the parts of the mixture are noticeably different from each other; ex: trail mix
homogeneous the parts of the mixture are so evenly mixed together that you can't distinguish the different materials; ex: saltwater
solution another word for homogeneous mixture; so evenly mixed that you can't distinguish the different parts
aqueous solution a solution where the solvent is water
solute the substance being dissolved in a solution; ex: the salt in saltwater
solvent the substance dissolving the solute in a solution; ex: the water in saltwater
concentration the amount of solute present in a solution
dilution the process of decreasing the amount of solute in a solution
rate of dissolution how fast a solute dissolves in a solvent
How does surface area affect the rate of dissolution? Higher surface area = faster dissolving because more particles are coming into contact faster
How does temperature affect the rate of dissolution? Higher temperature = faster dissolving because the solvent particles are moving quicker and coming into contact with the solute quicker
How does agitation (stirring) affect the rate of dissolution? More stirring = faster dissolving because more particles are coming into contact faster
