Clear-Cutting logging method where all growth is cleared from an area, regardless of age or type of plant
Combustible particularly burnable or easily burned
Coniferous Trees evergreen trees with needle-shaped leaves
Deforestation mass destruction of trees
Detritus waste on the forest floor
Emergent Layer forest layer made up of trees with crowns reaching above the canopy
Forest area dominated by tree species which receives enough annual precipitation to maintain trees as the dominant form in the landscape
Forest Floor bottom layer of the forest, covered in detritus such as decaying leaves, fallen trees and animal scat
Forest Management practice which includes surveys, categorization and monitoring of forests
Herb Layer forest layer covered by herbaceous plants; receives very little light
Herbaceous Plants soft-stemmed plants
High-Grading logging method; involves only cutting down the biggest or most valuable tree species in an area
Invasive Species non-native species introduced to an area which ultimately harm the ecosystem or human health
Midstory sub-layer right below the canopy; young trees stay dormant until a mature tree falls
Permafrost state of being frozen year-round
Precipitation material created by atmospheric condensation falling, such as rain, snow, sleet or hail
Prescribed Fires controlled fires used by experts to clear fire fuel from forests safely
Reforestation method used to replant trees in the same habitat where older ones were removed
Sediment sand, stone or soil carried into land or water
Selective Cutting only logging the most mature trees in an area
Shelterwood Cutting some desirable trees are left standing to ensure the ecosystem has the opportunity to establish healthy seedlings
Shrub Layer forest layer full of plants with woody stems, such as bushes and shrubs
Transpiration process of trees releasing water through their leaves
Tree Decline occurs when a tree is stressed due to pests, pollutants, drought or other unmet growing conditions
