| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| cell membrane | thin flexible layer surrounding the cell, controls what enters and exits the cell. protects and supports cell. |
| nucleus | a large membrane enclosed structure that contains the cells genetic material. controls many of the cells activities |
| nuclear envelope | membrane surrounding nucleus |
| nuclear pore | protein channels that allow materials into and out of the nucleus |
| nucleolus | dense core of the nucleus, contains RNA, assembles ribosomes |
| chromatin | threads of DNA throughout the nucleus, coils into chromosomes during cell division |
| cytoplasm | organelles and fluid portion of the cell outside the nucleus |
| mitochondria | powerhouse of the cell. they convert the chemical energy stored in food into usable form. Makes ATP!!! |
| golgi apparatus | modifies, sorts, and packages proteins and other materials from cell |
| centriole | help organize cell division, made if microtubules, not in plants |
| microtubule | halo, tube-like structure |
| vacuole | holds water, large storage sac |
| vesicle | small storage sac, stores and moves materials within and out of the cell. could be any cellular material like protein |
| lysosome | vesicle that contains digestive enzymes (garbage disposal) |
| microfilament | thin threadlike structures made of protein |
| ribosome | made in nucleus sent to cytoplasm, make proteins, found on RER and cytoplasm |
| RER | internal membrane system, ribosomes are found on the surface, aids in protein synthesis |
| SER | internal membrane system, doesn't contain ribosomes on the surface. makes lipids(fats) |
| Cytosol | fluid portion of cell |
| chloroplast | plants only! captures energy from the sun and converts into food. photosynesis |
| flagella | longer and more flowy. microtubule |
| cilia | microtubule that project from one surface of the cell membrane and can aid in movement, like a brush behind cell |
| cytoskeleton | protein filaments that provide shape and structure to the cells, also aid in transporting materials |
| cell | the basic units of structure in all front of life |
| organelle | specialized parts in cell that carryout the functions of the cell, called "little organs" |
