Soc. Psych. E1
Chapter 1-4
| Social Psych | Scientific study of how humans think, feel, behave in social context |
| 4 Components: Social Cognition | What affects perception, our selves or others |
| 4 Components: Social Influence | How we influence each other. Ex. confederates try to understand influence when you know the answer. |
| 4 Components: Social Interaction | Why do we like, love, and hate others |
| 4 Components: | |
| Fundamental Attribution Error (FAE) | focus on the role of personal causes and underestimate the impact of the situation on other people's behaviors Overestimate personal, underestimate situational. But don’t apply it to themselves, only applies to other people. Cognitive bias |
| Jones ' correspondence inference theory | explaining behavior, looking at two pathways Freely chosen, uncommon in its effects, low in social desirability = Originates from persons' stable traits EX. standing up to yelling at a dinner party = rude personality trait Somehow forced, common i |
| Availability heuristic | tendency to estimate likelihood that an event will occur by how easily instances of it come to mind. How we estimate an event will happen is based on what we already know. Cognitive information processing. Plane Crashes in the news |
| False Consensus | Effect; people think others agree with their beliefs and choices more than they actually do Ex. assuming everyone loves the same thing |
| Base Rate fallacy | people ignore general statistical information (the base rate) and focus too much on specific, individual details Overestimating unique (but salient) situations and underestimating mundane events. EX more likely to crash a car 5 miles from home |
| Counterfactual thinking | -the tendency to imagine alternative events or outcomes that might have occurred but did not What might have been…. |
| Motivational Biases | Our social perceptions are sometimes colored by personal hopes, wishes, needs, and preferences |
| Perceptions Of Moral Character | Judgement are made instantly |
| confirmation Bias: | Tendency to interpret, seek, and create information in ways that verify existing beliefs Seeking out information that aligns with our personal beliefs. Don’t want to see information that does not align. |
| Self-fulfilling prophecy | I perceive the person to think i am dumb, so I do behavior that dumb people do, thus makes me more dumb. E.x mother says my child is well behaved, so the child acts well-behaved, then in turn is well-behaved Expectations lead to behavior, confirmation. |
| Attribution theory | Describes explanations for behaviors. 2 Cat Personal (internal) Situational (external |
| Personal (internal); | attributing cause of behavior to personality |
| Situational (external) | attributing the cause of behavior to the situation ex. Behaviors attributed to luck |
| Affluent Group | more financially well off. When participants thought Hannah parts were affluent, they thought hannah was more likely to succeed in school/life. |
| Social Psych | Why people think, feel and behave the way they do. |
| Observational Research | Directly watching + recording ppls behavior |
| Scientific menthod | use to do research |
| Hi-Self Monitoring | multiple selves for diffrent situations. a personality trait where individuals actively observe, evaluate, and change their behavior, emotions, and self-presentation to fit different social situations and meet the expectations of others. |
| Random Assignment | Random selection for experiments, very important |
| Self Serving Beliefs | people credit their own skill and hard work for their successes while blaming bad luck or outside forces for their failures |
| Babyface | Associated with warmth and kindness |
| Disadvantage to self report | honesty and accuaracy |
| Ironic Mental Processess | Ex. when people say to not think about something... but you always think about it because they brought it up. |
| Correspondent Inference Theory (CIT) | Examine personality over situation. EX Standing up and yelling at a dinner party must mean person has a rude personality. |
| 1st Impression | formed instantly, mainly by physical appearance |
| Social Coontext | focus of social psych |
| Sociometer Theory | proposes that self-esteem acts as an internal, psychological gauge that monitors the degree to which a person is socially accepted and valued by others |
