Plate techonics
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| 3 types of plate boundaries | Divergent, Convergent, Transform boundaries |
| Divergent Boundaries | When plates pull apart, allowing magma to rise and create new crust. Found along mid-ocean ridges and rift valleys. |
| Convergent Boundaries | Where plates collide. Includes subduction zones (forming volcanoes and trenches) (forming massive mountain ranges). |
| Transform Boundaries | Plates slide past one another horizontally. Crust is neither created nor destroyed, but significant seismic energy is released through earthquakes. |
| which lithospheric plate boundary is least likely to produce volcanic activity. | Transform boundaries , it slides past each other and no crust creation or destruction: |
| what happens when 2 lithospheric plates collide along a subduction zone? | the denser plate sinks beneath the lighter plate and descends into the mantle |
| how subduction leads to volcanic activity. | when a sinking tectonic plate releases water and gases into the hot mantle, causing the rock to melt and form magma that rises to the surface |
| how a tsunami is generated along a subduction zone. | a massive underwater earthquake causes the sudden vertical displacement of the seafloor, pushing a huge column of water upward |
| an understanding of one ecological impact that tsunamis have on coastal environments. | High-energy waves smash into coral branches destroying fishes ecosystems |
