The Celestial Sphere
Locating objects in space
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Astrolabes | Tools for Locating objects in space |
| Orientation | Celestial poles- line up with the earths rotational axis (Earth's North and South pole) Celestial equator lines up with the earths equator |
| Ecliptic | The plane in which the earth revolves around the Sun, also includes the 12 constellations of zodiac. |
| Zenith | the point in the sky that is directly above the observer changes as the observer changes latitudes |
| Meridian | The line that passes through the celestial poles and the observers zenith. |
| Transit | When a celestial object crosses the meridian and begins to set. |
| Location on Earth is defined by | Latitude and Longitude |
| Location in the celestial sphere is defined by | declination and right ascension |
| Declination | Degrees North or South from the Celestial Equator. |
| Right ascension | acts as the east/west measurement (hours, minutes, seconds) |
| Where sun crosses the meridian on the spring equinox | 0 degrees |
| Rt. ascension/angular distance between stars can be approximated | 1 minute = 0.25 degrees or 1/2 moon diameter 4 minutes= 1 degree 1 hour = 15 degrees |
| Azimuth | The angle around the horizon from due north. North- 0 degrees East- 90 degrees South- 180 degrees West- 270 degrees |
| Altitude | The angle above the horizon (0 degrees on horizon) (max altitude would be 90 degrees) |
