Telencephalon
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| telencephalon | largest and most developed part of the forebrain |
| longitudinal fissures | separates brain into left and right hemipheres |
| lateral fissures | separates the temporal lobe from the frontal and parietal lobes |
| gyri | raised ridges (peaks/bumps) |
| corpus callosum | communication bridge between left and right hemispheres |
| sulci | shallow grooves on the surface of the brain |
| what lobes are the brain divided into? | frontal, temporal, parietal, and occipital |
| precentral gyrus | functions as the primary motor cortex (in front of central fissure), launches the pyramidal tract |
| postcentral gyrus | major touch gyrus, receives input from the thalamus. VPN projects here (right behind central fissure) |
| superior temporal gyrus | processes sound and language (right below lateral fissure), receives input from MGN |
| what does a fissure separate? | front and back (huge depression) |
| what does a sulcus separate? | just a little bit (like an accordion) |
| layer 1 neocortex connection & type of cells | cortical connections; almost no cell bodies |
| layer 2 neocortex connection & type of cells | cortical connections; many more stellate cells |
| layer 3 neocortex connection & type of cells | cortical connections; both |
| layer 4 neocortex connection & type of cells | input from thalamus; only stellate cells |
| layer 5 neocortex connection & type of cells | output to brainstem/spinal cord; many more pyramidal cells |
| layer 6 neocortex connection & type of cells | output to thalamus; both |
