BIO198 Module 1

QuestionAnswer
Definition of Biology The scientific study of life - (scientific study: collection of knowledge and process of gaining that knowledge, life: characteristics of living things.)
Characteristics of living organisms that define "life" 1. Acquire materials and energy 2. Organize structure 3. Maintain homeostasis 4. Reproduce 5. Sense and Respond to the environment
1. Acquire Materials and Energy Absorb nutrients from the sun or soil, gather food and water
2. Organize structure Birds make bird nests, homes
3. Maintain Homeostasis Regulating constant internal conditions
4. Reproduce Have offspring or produce seeds
5. Sense and Respond to the Environment Feels temp, hibernates during winter, seeks shelter during storm
What is biological evolution? The change in the genetic make up (heritable characteristics within a population) of a population over time.
The Biological Hierarchy a concept map that shows the relationship between various levels of life. atom, molecule, cells, tissue, organ, organ system, organism, population, community, ecosystem, biosphere
Atom The smallest level on the biological hierarchy. Fundamental building block of matter, smallest unit of an element. Ex. Nitrogen atom
Molecule Second smallest level, Two or more atoms held together by chemical bonds Ex. amino acid
Cells fundamental unit of all living organisms, made up of water, ions, and various molecules. Smallest form of life Ex. Cardiovascular muscle cell
Tissue group of cells that have related structures and functions Ex. Cardiovascular tissue
Organ multiple types of tissue that work together to carry out a function Ex. heart
Organism individual living thing, can be single cell, or multi-cell Ex. Bison
Population all individuals of a single species living in a specific area Ex. Bison population
Community all populations living within a specific area Ex. Prairie, animal, plant, fungus, etc
Ecosystem multiple communities and their non living environment
Biosphere all ecosystems on earth Ex. life on earth
Why is evolution an important unifying principle for biologists? Evolution explains how diversity of life has come about. Evolutionary relationships can explain many of the similarities between living organisms
Organ system system made up of multiple organs that function together Ex. Cardiovascular system
Scientific hypothesis A potential explanation based on known facts that can be testable (testable explanation)
What is the purpose of the scientific method? to acquire knowledge specifically about living organisms, the process by which scientists make observations, formulate potential explanations and test possible explanations
Scientific theory a general set of principles explaining an aspect of the natural world which has been repeatedly tested without being disproven
What is a difference between hypothesis and theory? A theory has not been disproven a hypothesis can be disproven
What are the two ways you can test a hypothesis? Observational (not manipulated) and Experimentation (manipulated conditions)
Scientific Method 1. Observations and data 2. Formulate hypothesis 3. Test hypothesis 4. New data 5. Conclusions

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
