LS 2 Cells vocab part 1
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cell Theory | The idea that all living things are made of cells, cells are the basic unit of life, and all cells come from pre-existing cells |
| Cell | The basic unit of structure and functions in living things |
| Organelle | A specialized structure inside a cell that performs a specific function |
| Metabolism | All interactions among molecules within the organized environment of the cell |
| Nucleus | An organelle that contains the cell's genetic material and helps control cell activities |
| Cell membrane | The boundary that surrounds the cell and controls what enters and leaves the cell |
| Cytoplasm | The material inside a cell where many cell activities occur |
| Mitochondria | Organelles involved in cellular respiration and energy transformation |
| Chloroplast | A plant-cell organelle where photosynthesis occurs |
| Cell wall | A rigid structure outside the cell membrane that provides support to plant cells |
| Vacuole | A structure that stores materials; plant cells typically have a large central vacuole |
| Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) | An organelle involved in producing and transporting molecules within the cell |
| Cell Cycle | The series of events through which a cell grows, duplicates its chromosomes, and divides |
| Interphase | The part of the cell cycle in which a cell grows and duplicates its chromosomes |
| Mitosis | The process in which a body cell divides its duplicated chromosomes to form two identical daughter cells |
| Daughter cells | The two cells produced when a parent cell divides |
| Chromosomes | A structure containing genetic material that is duplicated before cell division |
| Diffusion | The movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration |
| Osmosis | The movement of water across a semipermeable membrane due to a concentration difference |
| Semipermeable membrane | A membrane that allows some substances to pass through while preventing others from passing |
| Passive transport | Movement of substances across a membrane without requiring energy |
| Homeostasis | Maintaining stable internal conditions in a cell or organism |
