Life Functions
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Nutrition | obtain food and digest it down into nutrients which can be absorbed and used by the organism |
| Excretion | The removal of metabolic wastes produced by cells as a result of their life processes |
| Transport | Absorption and circulation |
| Synthesis | Metabolic activities by which an organism uses small molecules to build larger molecules |
| Growth | Getting bigger by increasing in size or number of cells |
| Reproduction | Organisms producing more of their own kind |
| Respiration | Respiration is the release of energy by the chemical breakdown of nutrients (primarily glucose) for use by the organism or cell. It is not the same as breathing! |
| Regulation | Involves the coordination and control of all the activities of an organism |
| Metabolism | The sum of all life processes, includes all the chemical reactions and activities being carried out in an organism, Preconception is that it has to do with food, but this is actually true because almost all of the life functions have to do with food |
| Homeostasis | Maintaining a constant, stable, internal environment regardless of an organism's external environment |
| Assimilation | of nutrients by plants through their roots. |
| Ingestion | the act of consuming food |
| Digestion | the breakdown of food into nutrients by the body |
| Egestion | biological process of discharging unusable, undigested material from an organism or cell, most commonly known as defecation in multicellular animals |
| Absorption | usable materials (food, water, oxygen) are taken in by the organism into their cells via diffusion or active transport |
| Circulation | these materials are circulated around within the organism and within cells. |
| Development | Changes that occur as an organism matures |
| Stimuli | are changes in the environment that invoke a response |
| Asexual reproduction | Only one parent involved, Offspring are genetically identical to the parent, Bacteria, some plants, fungi |
| Sexual Reproduction | Two parents involved, Offspring are genetically different from the parent, Animals |
