psych concept q#3

QuestionAnswer
endorphins "nature's morphine" pain perception, wanting sensation, linked to opioid epidemic
norepinephrine physical arousal (alert & ready), memory and learning low levels-depression high levels- stress
serotonin sleep & emotional stress low levels-depression
acetylcholine learning & memory low amount- Alzheimer's
dopamine rewarding sensations low amount- Parkinson's high amount- Schizophrenia
GABA works to inhibit brain activity, in constant competition w/ Glutamine
label parts of a neuron google doc
neurotransmitter chemical messenger. carries signal
synaptic gap space between nerve cells where they pass chemical messages
node of raniver boosts signal
axon terminal (buds) releases the message
myelin sheath fatty cells around the axon, increases speed
axon passes the signal along
dendrites receive information
soma cell body, contains nucleus
axon hillock threshold gate keeper
3 types of neurons sensory- brings in info from body's sense receptors interneurons- relays info between sensory & motor outputs motor- carry info from CNS to muscle glands, chemical messages send electric impulses
receive/release location neurotransmitters released from axon terminal, received by dendrites
excitatory/inhibitory excitatory neurotransmitters excite the neuron and then the neuron fires, inhibitory neurotransmitters hinder the neuron and then it doesn't fire
two ways synthetic drugs (or substances from nature) are designed to impact neurotransmitters: what are they called/how does each function? agonists boost the function of neurotransmitters (ex: nicotine), antagonist blocks the function (ex: opioid). both are synthetic
action (spike) potential and what causes it to fire in a neuron. from dendrites to axon terminals, messages carried in one direction by electrical impulses neuron is resting at -70, it receives the signal at -55, it fires at +30, then it returns to its resting period
neuron communication chain you smell smoke- sensory-interneurons-brain-interneurons-motor neurons-you run for help!

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
