Macromolecules Vocab

QuestionAnswer
Organic compound Organic compounds are chemical molecules that contain carbon atoms covalently bonded to hydrogen atoms.
Macromolecule A macromolecule is a very large molecule made up of thousands of smaller atoms connected together.
Monomer A monomer is a small, basic molecule that can chemically bond with other similar or identical molecules to create a larger structure called a polymer.
Polymer a polymer is a large molecule (macromolecule) made of many smaller, repeating building blocks called monomers linked together by covalent bonds.
Carbohydrate A carbohydrate is a biological macromolecule made of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms, typically in a 1:2:1 atomic ratio.
Monosaccharide A monosaccharide is a simple sugar that serves as the basic building block and simplest form of carbohydrates in biology.
Disaccharide A disaccharide is a carbohydrate molecule formed when two simple sugars (monosaccharides) join together through a covalent bond.
Lipid Lipids are a diverse group of organic molecules—including fats, oils, and waxes—that do not dissolve in water.
Phospholipid A phospholipid is a type of lipid molecule that forms the primary building block of cell membranes.
Protein Proteins are large, complex molecules made up of long chains of amino acids that perform vital functions in all living cells.
Amino Acid An amino acid is an organic molecule that serves as the fundamental building block of proteins.
Enzyme An enzyme is a biological catalyst—almost always a protein—that speeds up chemical reactions in living organisms without being used up in the process.
Nucleic Acid Nucleic acids are large biological molecules that store and pass on genetic information in all living cells and viruses.
Nucleotide A nucleotide is an organic molecule that serves as the basic structural building block and monomer of nucleic acids.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
