Macromolecule Vocab
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Organic Compound | Molecules built around the element carbon. |
| Macromolecule | Large molecules made up of smaller molecules that had bonded together. They are large, complex molecules that play essential roles in the structure, function, and regulation of living organisms. |
| Monomer | The aforementioned smaller molecules that make up macromolecules, often gained through the food we eat |
| Polymer | Multiple monomers combined together that make a new substance. |
| Carbohydrate | Class of macromolecule composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms in a 1:2:1 ratio. They function as a primary source of energy for living organisms. |
| Monosaccharide | The most simple form of carbohydrates. Includes glucose. |
| Disaccharide | Consist of two monosaccharide units together, things such as sucrose and lactose. |
| Lipid | Molecules such as fats, oils, and waxes. They are often just fats, used as a secondary source of energy for us humans. |
| Phospholipid | Another form of lipids that make up the cell membranes of cells. They form a lipid bilayer that acts as a barrier. |
| Protein | Polymer made out of monomers called amino acids. Are composed of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur (sometimes). |
| Amino Acid | |
| Enzyme | Biological catalysts that speed up chemical reactions via breaking down molecules and synthesizing new ones. |
| Nucleic Acid | Polymers composed of monomers called nucleotides. Two different types of nucleic acid: DNA and RNA |
| Nucleotide | Three part unit that consists of a 5-carbon sugar, a phosphate group, and a nitrogenous base.. |
