Algebraic Properties

QuestionAnswer
commutative property the order in which numbers are added or multiplied does not effect the result Ex: a + b = b + a a * b = b * a
associative property the way terms are grouped in an addition or multiplication expression does not effect the result Ex: a + (b+c) = (a+b) +c a * (b*c) = (a*b) * c
order of operations parenthesis, exponents, multiply/divide, add/subtract
absolute value the value of a number without its sign, or the difference between a number and zero expressed as a positive number
